Lady Huskies defeat Meeteetse
The Burlington Lady Huskies had their first conference game of the year against Meeteetse on Friday in Burlington. Despite a slow start in the first quarter, the Lady Huskies dominated the game, outscoring the Longhorns 40-9 in the first half and winning 57-22.
“These slower games are harder sometimes than intense ones because the girls need to keep up their intensity and play hard, despite what the other team is doing,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam. “We knew this would be a game where we could focus on running our offenses completely through or working on certain plays. It really slows down the pace of the game when I have to put in certain stipulations on offense and hard to pass up a wide-open layup or wide-open shot and focus on working the ball around and working as a team.”
The Huskies continued to use the game for working on tightening up their offense and defense and getting playing time for the whole bench. “The scoring was really spread out throughout all the girls. This will be helpful in games where our top scorers are struggling. We can get some of the other girls to step up and take on that leadership role on offense,” said Haslam.
Jessie Michaels led scorers with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Naomi McNiven followed close behind with 11 points and Breanne Walker had nine points. Six other Lady Huskies scored at least one basket and the team had 19 steals.
The Lady Huskies travel to Cowley on Friday and Saturday for the Big Horn Basin Classic.
