It was a slow week for the Lady Huskies, taking on Meeteetse and St. Stephens and holding both opponents to under 20 points collectively. “It’s so hard to play these kinds of games because you can’t just let the girls play,’” said Coach Chery Haslam. “We do our best to work on fundamentals and controlling our pace during these games.”

Friday night in Meeteetse, the Lady Huskies won 53-8. “We didn’t press or push the ball, just tried to focus on strong defense and control on offense. We didn’t play great and struggled in several areas, but it seems like we struggle when we can’t push the ball and play a faster-paced game. All the girls got playing time, but we tried to keep the varsity girls in since it was a varsity game and our JV played Meeteetse earlier in the week.”

Burlington’s goal of outrebounding every team was met again this week, as they grabbed 40 rebounds compared to the Lady Longhorns 11. “We were really struggling to make our inside shots, so we kept getting second chance rebounds. Naomi McNiven had a great game. She’s done a great job of stepping up and showing great leadership during practice and games. Defensively, she always gives 110%. She’s very good at drawing defense and dishing passes for assists on offense as well. Sarah McNiven also had a great game on the inside for us. Hannah Stanworth stepped up and played well,” said Haslam.

S. McNiven led the team with 12 points, Hailee Winterholler added 10 points, Dalley Bassett had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists and N. McNiven had six points, 11 rebounds and six steals.

The Lady Huskies hosted St. Stephens on Saturday and won 77-11. “The last time we played them, we really tried to slow things down and play, but they were walking around on defense and not even trying. So, this time, we decided we would just come out playing, other than pressing. We really slowed down our offense and worked the ball around for a specified time each time down the court and took specified shots. Everyone on the bench was able to come in and get some good playing time. The girls all played well and controlled the game much better than we did on Friday night. Many of the players were able to put points on the board and the scoring was very spread out. Our older girls stepped up and led the younger ones when they were in the game together,” said Haslam.

Burlington once again topped rebounding, 52-14, and had an impressive 23 assists. S. McNiven had 13 points and nine rebounds. Stanworth added 13 points. H. Winterholler had 11 points, seven rebounds and  six assists and Bassett led rebounding with 12 and added six points.

The Lady Huskies picked up a game against Powell JV on Tuesday night and will head to Dubois on Saturday, with a tipoff time of noon.
