Lady Huskies pull off close win in overtime
Two more wins were added to the Lady Huskies record this week as they faced Farson and St. Stephens on the road. Burlington picked up the Farson game after having an opening with Ten Sleep not fielding a girls’ team this year. “It was an interesting game,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam. “Farson is a very physical team. It’s good for us to play games like this because we don’t face physical teams as often as we need to.”
It was a tight game with the score tied at 16 headed into halftime. “The girls were working hard on offense, but our shots were not falling. Our shot percentage was not great, especially from the 3 point line. We didn’t make any.”
The score was tied up once again as regulation time ran out and the game went into an intense overtime with Paxton Philpott scoring a buzzer beater shot from the inside that put the Lady Huskies up and they won the game with a final score of 46-45. “We had a great rebounding game, which is what we’ve been focusing on this season. We had a lot of turnovers though. The girls were making mistakes that we don’t normally make, but the pressure was working for Farson on defense,” said Haslam.
Philpott led her team with 17 points and five assists. Burlington pulled down 48 boards with Hailee Winterholler leading with 13 and adding eight points. Sarah McNiven grabbed 11 boards and nine points and Dalley Bassett added 10 boards and six points. Every Burlington girl who entered the game contributed to the final score.
Saturday brought St. Stephens for a conference game and the Lady Huskies won 69-21. “You never know what to expect when you go play on their home court. We played pretty slow the whole game and then pushed the ball at the end. Everyone was able to get some playing time during this game,” said Haslam.
Once again the Lady Huskies dominated the boards with 52. Winterholler brought down 17 and added seven points. Naomi McNiven had 10 rebounds and 10 points, five steals and five assists. Philpott led scorers with 15 points, four steals and five assists and Bassett added 11 points.
The Ladies Huskies played Greybull Tuesday night for the annual Pink game and then will be in Basin on Friday to face Riverside with the JV game at 4 and the varsity at 5 p.m.
