The Lady Huskies had a strong showing this week, beating conference rivals Meeteetse and Dubois.

Burlington played Meeteetse on Thursday, but found out Wednesday night that Meeteetse had lost one of its players and would only be playing with four. “It was a forfeit for them. We had three of our girls play with them and we ‘scrimmaged,’” said Coach Cheryl Haslam. “We knew ahead of time, we would just have to try to work on different things on offense and not be able to push the ball.

“The girls were able to try most of our offensive plays and did a good job of working the ball around and finding the good inside shot. It was good for them to have practice doing this. Everyone that played was able to score.”

The game ended with a final score of 59-5 but because it was a forfeit, the score is listed as 2-0.

On Saturday, the Lady Huskies hosted Dubois in their first home game of the season, winning 62-33. “Halfway through the first quarter, it was still 0-0,” said Haslam. “We were getting some really good shots off, but nothing was falling.” Burlington went into halftime with a 26-15 lead and came out with a very strong third quarter, scoring 28 points to Dubois’ 12.

“They were doing great things on offense and looking at our posts inside,” said Haslam. “Our shooting percentage still wasn’t fantastic, but much better than the first half. I was really impressed with our assists in this game. As a team, we had 15 assists. That’s huge compared to some of our past games. We were also able to get 19 steals, many of them in the 3rd quarter.

“One of my goals for the girls before this game was to work as a team. I think they did a great job with this. They played as a team and worked the ball around really well. Everyone looked to shoot, but also looked to their teammates if they had a better shot,” said Haslam.

Breanne Walker led the offense with 17 points, including three 3s. Sarah McNiven had 10 points and nine rebounds and Paxton Philpott had 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Naomi McNiven contributed eight points, five assists and five steals.

This week the Lady Huskies will travel to Worland for the Big Horn Basin Hoops Classic on Friday and Saturday. They will play Rocky Mountain at 4:30 and Worland at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s play will be based off Friday’s pool play results.
