Lady Huskies top Lovell JV and St. Stephens
The Lady Huskies had a successful week, beating both the Lovell JV and St. Stephens at home.
With Ten Sleep not fielding a girls team this season, Burlington picked up a game against Lovell’s JV team.
“The girls did a great job of playing together and working as a team,” Coach Cheryl Haslam said of her team’s 55-33 win.
Inspired by their loss to Lovell’s varsity at the Big Horn Basin Hoops Classic, the Lady Huskies spent time working on their offense in practice.
“We play a much better defensive game when we are successful on offense,” said Haslam. “It really helps their mindset and staying calm when things work better offensively and this shows in our stats as well. Almost everyone that played was able to score. It’s nice to see everyone being a threat on offense.”
“Naomi McNiven had a great game,” Haslam continued. “It was really nice to see this from her. She is an excellent player and it was great to see it show up in a game like this. The rest of the scoring was spread throughout the team. Our assists keep going up each game. They are playing really well together and it’s showing more and more each game.”
N. McNiven led with 22 points, nine rebounds and nine steals and Paxton Philpott had 14 points and five steals.
Saturday the Lady Huskies hosted St. Stephens in a conference match. They beat the Eagles, 61-10, and had an impressive first half, scoring 24 points and 19 points in the opening quarters. “The girls were transitioning the ball really well, filling lanes and looking for each other under the basket,” said Haslam. “Once again, the offense looked much better and they were working the ball around. They played great defense. They communicated well through the screens and got some really good steals. The younger girls were all able to get some playing time in this game as well.
“Hailee Winterholler had a great game for us on the inside. She had several offensive rebounds that she put back in for points. Dalley Bassett also did well on the inside and Naomi and Breanne did a great job with steals and hustling on defense.”
Winterholler led the team with 13 points and 14 rebounds and Bassett had 12 points and 6 rebounds.
The Lady Huskies faced Greybull at home on Tuesday and play Riverside Friday for Senior Night with JV at 4 and a varsity tip off at 5:30.
