Lady Huskies undefeated at 1A Jamboree
There was a lot of anticipation for the Lady Huskies headed into the 1A Jamboree held at the WYO Sports Ranch in Casper. They would get to face off against Hulett again, after the Lady Red Devils beat them at a previous tournament. “Our first match up was incredibly disappointing for everyone,” said Coach Natoshia Heaton. “The only goal I had was to play our game and play well. This would have been enough of a victory in my eyes. However, we didn’t just do the, but we also defeated the Red Devils in three The girls played well. They adapted to the Red Devils’ play, adjusting defense positioning and keeping Hulett guessing where the next swing would come from.”
Next up was Upton and the Lady Huskies took them in three games as well. On Saturday, they faced Little Snake River, Kaycee and Casper Christian and defeated them all in two sets. “I think the biggest surprise of the tournament was Casper Christian. This is a team we defeated with ease earlier in the season. They couldn’t even pass the ball at that point. It was a much different story Saturday. They had improved significantly since the previous match up. We had a player missing and that always throws things a bit off. The first set we struggled to get going and found ourselves at the brink of a loss. The score was 23-21. I called a timeout and had a little discussion with the girls. I told them to quit worrying about the score and play the skilled volleyball we have been practicing. If they did this, everything would work out. Everything did indeed work out. We got a side out and ended up on top with a score of 26-24.”
With their wins from this past week, Burlington knocked off Hulett and is currently ranked #1 in 1A and has the most wins by a 1A school this season. “This team of athletes has been so fun to coach. They listen intently to everything I say. After they finish listening, they make the changes that I ask of them. It can be frustrating as a coach to feel as if the things you say go in one ear and out the other. This weekend displayed to me that this group is not in that category! It is rewarding and wonderful to coach such a disciplined, dedicated, willing, eager and enjoyable group of young ladies,” said Heaton.
The Lady Huskies hosted Shoshoni at home for Senior Night and Homecoming on Tuesday and will travel to Meeteetse on Thursday, with JV at 4 and Varsity at 5:30 p.m. and Basin on Friday with JV at 5 p.m. and Varsity at 6 p.m.
