Lady Huskies win another two games
With Ten Sleep and Meeteetse not having a girls basketball team, it has led the Lady Huskies to look for games to fill their season. They have picked up games with the JV teams of neighboring bigger schools, but had both games scheduled this past week with Cody and Lovell canceled. They did pick up a game with Sheridan’s JV team on Friday and played in Dubois on Saturday, for another two wins.
“Friday in Sheridan, was a good, tough game for us to play,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam. “They played tight, tough defense and the girls had to push through the whole game. They had a good trapping press and it was good for the girls to have to stay calm and get through it. It rattled us at times, but they did a much better job getting through it as the game went on.”
The game was tight with Burlington leading in the first quarter and most of the second quarter, but Sheridan outscored the Lady Huskies and took the lead heading into halftime. “We came out after half and really played well. The girls worked the ball around on defense and were able to get some good inside shots. The posts did a great job of getting open and our guards did well with getting the ball down to them. It was good to see the girls stick with it, physically and mentally, to come away with the win.”
The Lady Huskies won 41-29. Sarah McNiven led the team with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. Paxton Philpott added 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Saturday in Dubois, was a little shaky to begin with, but the Lady Huskies once again finished strong. “It took us a few minutes to wake up and play. Once we got started though, they did well and scored 21 points in the first quarter,” said Haslam.
Dubois rallied and gave Burlington a game in the second half. “There were several fouls being called on us on defense and the girls began to pull back for fear of fouling out. Dubois was able to score 25 points in the second half. We were still doing well and scoring on offense, but they closed in on us a few times. The girls adjusted well on offense and tried some different things that worked well. We didn’t have much of an outside game, but were able to finish on the inside again. Sarah had another good game for us. She has stepped up the last two games and it’s nice to see this right before regionals,” said Haslam.
S. McNiven led the team again with 17 points. Naomi McNiven had 12 points. Haliee Winterholler had 10 points and nine rebounds and Paxton Philpott had nine points, 10 rebounds and seven steals.
For the last week of the regular season, the Lady Huskies will be in Riverside on Friday with JV at 4 and varsity tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
