Lady Huskies win conference opener
The Lady Huskies had a strong showing at their first conference game of the season on Saturday in Meeteetse, winning in three sets with final scores of
25-11, 25-17 and 25-9.
“Sometimes we get a little bit of a slow start to begin a set, but I felt like we came out confidently and went right to work,” said Coach Erin Bassett. “We have been working on playing with intensity and composure this season, and while the ceiling and low beams in that gym add another level of difficulty to the game, I was happy with our passing and digging.
“It’s fun to see the confidence growing in our team, they were able to successfully run several of the offensive options that they have been working on in practice. Six of the seven girls that played in the match walked away with kills on their stat sheets, our libero was the only one who didn’t log at least one kill, but that is to be expected.”
Coach Bassett is similarly pleased with the depth of her team. “Each [member] of our team works hard to be a threat. If it isn’t Sarah McNiven, it’s Naomi McNiven, or Paxton Philpott, or Dalley Bassett, or Haille Winterholler, or Eve McNulty or Adison Haslam. You just can’t sleep on any of them.
“We had a great day from the service line as well with 21 aces from the team. Adison and Dalley were in a close race for most points served in a row. Dalley served nine points in one set and Adison edged her out by serving 10 in a row in the next set.”
The Huskies have also added Kay Townsend to their coaching staff. Said Basset,“She has lots of coaching experience and brings a fun, competitive spirit to our team.”
The Lady Huskies played St. Stephens on Tuesday night and will be in Saratoga at the Encampment-Saratoga Tournament on Friday, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 14.
