Lady Rebel thinclads win Shoshoni invite, boys third

The Riverside Rebels track and field squad got in one more meet before the Easter break Thursday in Shoshoni. The Lady Rebels were the top team in the girls division with a score of 114 points, 13 points ahead of Thermopolis. The Rebel boys placed third with a team score of 77.5 points, seven points behind Wind River and 11.5 points ahead of Ther - mopolis. Burlington won the boys division with 172 points.

"We had a great turnout in Shoshoni and the athletes really grew in just the few days we had to practice," coach Dale Query said. "We are still down a couple of girls that will be a huge asset to our team and will be very competitive." Coaches selected senior Breana Riley as the female athlete of the week as she won the girls triple jump with a jump of 295½. She also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles, coming in at 18.82 seconds, and second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.6 seconds. "Not only has Breana been in the top three positions in her hurdles but she has been dominating in long jump," Query said.

Senior Monique Velasquez placed second in the triple jump, sailing 28-6¾, and third in the 400-me - ter dash, finishing the lap in 1:13.19. Junior Jersey Streitz placed third in the 100-meter hurdles, coming in at 21.81 seconds, and eighth in the long jump, jumping 11-4½. Freshman Dakota Cervantes placed third in the 3,200-meter run, finishing the two-mile in 14:55.72, and freshman Anna Stone placed fourth in the twomile, coming in at 15:42.84.

Junior Markita Gesch and sophomore Hailee McClure tied for second in the long jump with a jump of 12-2½. McClure also placed fourth in the high jump, clearing 4-4, and fifth in the triple jump, sailing 26-8½.

Freshman Melisa Martinez placed sixth in the triple, with a jump of 25- 7, and seventh in the long jump, leaping 11-5½. She also placed seventh in the 200-meter dash, finishing the half-lap in 32.35 seconds.

"One of our strong points is our horizontal jumpers," Query said. "In girls long jump, we had four athletes in the top eight. In girls triple jump we also had four in the top eight." The 1,600 sprint-medley relay team of Cervantes, Stone, Streitz and sophomore Laila Davis placed second with a time of 5:38.72, a personal best.

The 400-meter relay team of McClure, Riley, Ve - lasquez and Gesch placed fourth with a time of 58.83 seconds.

In the girls throwing events, senior Alexis Garay placed third in the discus, throwing 74-9, and seventh in the shot put, throwing 21-8.

Davis placed fourth in the disc, throwing 702, and ninth in the shot, throwing 21-3¼. Sopho - more June Wedor placed eighth in the disc, throwing 62-10.

OTHER RIVERSIDE GIRLS RESULTS WERE:

100m dash – Martinez 12th, 15.27, Gesch 15th, 15.83, Stone 17th, 16.11; shot put – Wedor 12th, 20-10¾, Stone 15th, 18-3; discus – Streitz 16th, 50-11.

BOYS RESULTS

Sophomore Trenton Coronel was named male athlete of the week as he placed second in the long jump with a personal-best jump of 17-1½, and fifth in the 400-meter dash, finishing the oval in 1:00.24. He also placed sixth in the high jump, clearing a personal best 5-4, and ninth in the 200-meter dash, finishing the half-lap in 27.25 seconds. "He has worked extremely hard in practice and that dedication is paying off in his events," Query said.

Junior Garret Ellis-Rudd placed third in the 110-meter hurdles, coming in at 17.97 seconds, and third in the 300-me - ter hurdles with a time of 46.08 seconds, a personal best. He also placed third in the triple jump, leaping a personal best 36-11½, and fourth in the high jump, clearing 5-4, also a personal best.

Sophomore Dylan Alexander placed fourth in the 400-meter dash, coming in at 59.59 seconds. Freshman Ty Strohschein placed sixth in the 200-meter dash, coming in at 26.04 seconds, and 10th in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 12.77 seconds. Junior Ryan Hoyt placed second in the 3,200-meter run, finishing the two-mile in 11:56.17. sophomore Jose Jimenez placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run, finishing the mile in 5:09.27. sophomore Hayden Paxton placed 10th in the mile, coming in at 5:33.59. The 1,600 sprint-medley relay team of Paxton, Strohschein, Alexander and Hoyt placed third with a time of 4:24.82. In the boys throwing events, junior Griffin Zapata placed fifth in the shot, throwing 32-5½, and sixth in the discus, throwing 84-11. Strohschein placed fourth in the disc, throwing 99-3, and junior Brian Gesch placed seventh with a throw of 82-10. "On the men's side, we had a great showing in discus with three placing in the top eight," Query said.

OTHER RIVERSIDE BOYS RESULTS WERE:

100m dash – Gesch 24th, 16.9; 200m dash – Blake Mautz 12th, 29.53; 400m dash – Mautz 11th, 1:09.15; shot put – Gesch 12th, 26-11¾.

The Rebels are scheduled to compete at the Meeteetse Invitational Friday at 1 p.m. "Getting ready for Meeteetse, we will continue to get in shape, work on staying healthy as well as working technique in the field events as well as relay exchanges," Query said. "With a good week of practice, I anticipate more growth from these kids."
