Lady Rebels fall in Big Horn Basin Classic

The Riverside Rebels lost three games during a tough outing at the Big Horn Basin Classic. 

The Lady Rebels faced off against Powell (63-24) and Wind River (70-36) on Friday, and Lovell (50-22) on Saturday.

“I was proud of the fight in our girls even though we struggled against some bigger schools,” Coach Jason Mitchell said. “I think it may have been the weekend to propel us into a different team going forward.”

Brooklynn Paxton led in scoring with 13 points against Wind River and 12 against Powell. Johnna Clifford followed with 12 and two, then Varissa Olsen with two and six, Kennedy Bassett with seven, and Ada Pratt with two and four points in each game, respectively. Vinaya Vanderploeg led in assists (2) and steals (2) against Powell.  Clifford had two steals and eight rebounds against Wind River. 

“I still love our athleticism,” Mitchell continued, “but I think we saw that things can be tough when our opponents can match our size and quickness.”

In their Friday match-ups, the girls saw high turnovers, losing the ball to Powell 34 times and Wind River 44. While they made a good effort of working for rebounds, it wasn’t quite enough, with Mitchell noting his team still needs to take better care of the ball and improve their attention to detail on the defensive end of the game.

The Lady Rebels play Meeteetse at home on Thursday and are away on Saturday.
