Letter to the Editor: County commission continues tradition of low-balling libraries

Dear editor:

Hello to the Greybull Standard and county library users.

I shouldn’t be shocked at how the Big Horn County commissioners disregard the needs of county libraries and library patrons.  It is their years-long tradition, financially low-balling the libraries.

In other county settings,  will staff members be asked to voluntarily take on maintenance tasks such as cleaning restrooms, floors, provide their own supplies and transportation?  Give up benefits?  Have other county offices organized as library patrons and workers have — as “Friends” groups — to raise money to help out?  Maybe there is a “Friends of County Roads” or “Pals of Roads and Bridges” group or Courthouse Cowboys coming to help when money’s short?  Have courthouse offices found ways “in-house” to reduce their costs?

Our libraries CARE about kids and families, and they offer services that no one else provides. Please contact Big Horn County commissioners, asking them to reconsider budget cuts to county libraries, all five of which are affected.
