Letter to the Editor: Proposition 1: No good for Wyoming communities

Anyone living in small town Wyoming and loving it should vote no on Prop 1. Having lower property taxes sounds great, but these taxes help fund our way of life and make it possible to live in such a wonderful area. One possible cut we may face is to our search and rescue team, the very same team that just won a new vehicle and a nice amount of money to help with expenses.  If we don’t want to try to win these kinds of competitions every year, we should seriously think about voting Prop 1 down.

One thing that I have always been proud of is our search and rescue in Big Horn County, these folks are volunteers who go above and beyond to help anybody. It doesn’t matter if you need their help in the mountain backcountry, a river or lake, or in our high desert areas, they will come to help you. Right after receiving financial aid, they are faced with threats to cut their critical funding. All this during a year with huge numbers of rescue missions already carried out. Beyond search and rescue, there are many other rural programs that will face funding cuts and negatively affect our safety and overall wellbeing. We have a chance now to make our voices heard! Please vote no on Prop 1.
