Letter to the Editor: Republican leaders using erroneous language, ignoring truth
Dear Editor:
This is in response to Sharon Hall’s letter where she referred to President Trump being elected by “the majority of voters.” Senator Lummis said, “The American people overwhelmingly elected” the president. Representative Hageman said there was a “clear mandate from the people.” The president himself claims a “landslide.”
The Federal Election Commission posted the official count on its website: Trump 77,302,580 -49.8%, Harris 75,017,613 - 48.32%, the balance taken by minor candidates and write-ins. That is a difference of 1.48%, one of the closest elections in modern American history like 1948, 1960, 1968 and 2000. In three elections, President Trump has NEVER carried 50% of the popular vote.
This reminds me of the story attributed to Lincoln: If I call a dogs tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Four. Just calling something a leg does not make it one!
As a lifelong Republican, I am severely disappointed with party leaders using such erroneous language when the truth is so glaringly obvious. This is disingenuous at best and an outright lie at worst.
Sincerely,
Tom Harrington
