Marathon week for the Lady Huskies volleyball team
The Burlington Lady Huskies had another full week starting off with Riverside on Tuesday. “It was a great way to start off the week. It was our first conference game that we knew was going to be a challenge and they rose to the occasion,” said Coach Erin Bassett.
Burlington went 3-1 with final scores of 19-25, 25-17, 28-26 and 25-17.
“Riverside is always well prepared so we knew we would have to bring our A game. Even after dropping the first set, the girls stayed focused and didn’t back down. Our blockers did a great job of adjusting to their hitters and when they did sneak one past, our defenders were ready. Our libero, Eve McNulty, did an amazing job of keeping our floor clean and setting us up to attack back. Overall, I think everyone played that match really consistently — we didn’t have lots of high or low performances but a lot of teamwork and everyone doing their part.”
Next up was the opening home game for the Lady Huskies as they faced Wyoming Indian. It was a quick three games with Burlington taking all three, 25-17, 25-10, 25-14.
Friday and Saturday, the Lady Huskies traveled to Greybull and Thermopolis for the Western Wyoming Challenge. “I don’t think we could have asked for a better schedule, we got to play every team from the other side of our region that we didn’t play last week,” said Bassett.
First up was Saratoga. The Lady Huskies lost both games, 23-25, 25-27, and then played Farson, winning in two, 25-20, 25-20.
Saturday brought Little Snake River in the morning and Encampment in the afternoon. “Little Snake has been performing well across the state and I think the game was a big question mark in our minds,” said Bassett. “I wish the girls would have approached it with the same confidence that they played Riverside earlier in the week, because I absolutely feel like we could have beat that team. We missed a costly number of serves. It takes a little more focus to serve in those short courts when you are up against the bleachers and have fans walking in and around you, but we could have used the extra chances to play.” The Lady Huskies in two, 20-25 and 16-25.
In their final match of the week, the Huskies lost to Encampment, 25-19, 24-25, 12-15.
“This was a good match as well, we would have liked to end with a win, but now we know how we stack up and can prepare to meet them again,” said Bassett. “Our region is really competitive this year; it will be a battle to determine the top four for the state tournament. I’m not sure how much space there is between the top eight in the state. It’s going to make for some really interesting matchups!”
The Lady Huskies will have a much quieter week, hosting St. Stephens on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and Dubois on Saturday with JV at noon and varsity at 1 p.m.
