Marietta Dunlap
Jan. 2, 1935- Nov. 26, 2023
Marietta Dunlap, a beloved mother, grandmother, and talented seamstress, peacefully passed away on Nov. 26, 2023, at the North Big Horn Hospital. She was 88 years old.
Marietta was born on Jan. 2, 1935, in Winfield, Mo., to Charles Henry Pruyn and Mary Lee Blakey. She spent her formative years in Winfield, focusing on school as a straight A student. She was also a talented athlete who excelled in basketball, softball and volleyball. She found her lifelong partner, James Emery Dunlap, after graduating high school. The couple was blessed with six children, and Marietta dedicated herself to being a loving and nurturing stay-at-home mom while James pursued his career as an air tanker pilot, bush pilot and flight instructor.
A gifted seamstress, Marietta lovingly crafted all her children’s clothes and even contributed to the joy of her grandchildren’s weddings by creating beautiful dresses for them. Her creativity extended beyond sewing, as she enjoyed crocheting and plastic canvas work. Incredibly, at the age of 88, she crafted an impressive 100 tissue box covers, a testament to her enduring passion for creating beautiful things.
Marietta’s world revolved around her children and grandchildren, and her devotion to family was unwavering. After the passing of her beloved husband James more than 40 years ago, she remained steadfast in her love for him, never feeling the need to date or remarry. In 1986, she moved to Greybull, choosing to be closer to her children during a difficult time.
Known for her great sense of humor and sweet personality, Marietta was a magnetic presence, drawing people toward her warmth and kindness. Nurses at the hospital, deeply touched by her spirit, shed tears the night she peacefully departed this world. Her love and laughter will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Marietta was preceded in death by her loving husband; parents; brothers, Norman Dale Pruyn and Donald Pruyn; sister, Corene Admire; great-grandsons, Ryder Coal Hansen and Graison Emanuel Amir Gray and great-granddaughter, Ruby Mae Solberg.
She is survived by her sons, James Michael “Mike” (Deanna) Dunlap of Port Orchard, Wash., and Dennis James Dunlap of Greybull, Wyo.; daughters: Debra Dunlap of Williston, N.D., Sandra (Bill) Hunt of Greybull, Rhonda (Bob) Hewitt of Dillon, Mont., and Brenda Graham of Greybull; 22 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Marietta Dunlap leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and unwavering dedication to family. Her memory will forever be cherished by her children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives she touched. A private family service will be held at a later date. May she rest in peace, reunited with her true love, James, in the embrace of eternity. Memorial donations may be made to the Greybull Presbyterian Church.
