McNiven breaks high jump record
With their sophomores taking the ACT test, the Burlington Huskies were down in numbers in Powell on Saturday at the LA Kohnke Invitational. They still saw some individual successes but struggled against the larger teams, with the boys taking fifth with 51 points behind Cody, Powell, Riverton and Lovell and the girls in seventh place.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Huskies set 14 new personal bests and McKenzie Mehr set personal bests in all her events. Breanne Walker is back on the track after healing up from a basketball injury and qualified for state in both the high jump and pole vault and Sarah McNiven broke the school record. “We had been watching Sarah jump well all week and had a feeling that our 15-year old record might be broken,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “We weren’t disappointed. Sarah, only a freshman, cleared 5-3 on her first attempt, breaking the school record previously set by Michelle Fabricious in 2009. Sarah is a great teammate. Last week we needed a 4X400 runner to fill our final relay and she ran the distance for the first time and helped her team qualify.”
On the boys’ side, Paul and Howard McNiven again battled it out in the mile, both earning pre-qualifying times. “Those two really push each other in practice and at meets. It’s great when you have a couple of kids that bring out the best in each other. Paul has also now qualified in both hurdle races, now holding some of the best times in those events.” Another 4X100 relay team qualified for state, this time with Joe Bassett, Jordan Michaels, Brikton Wardell and Jordan Casey. “Cole Gotfredson continues to improve in the pole vault, gaining 6 inches each week for the past four meets and fellow freshman Robert Mehr set personal bests in the 100, 200 and 400 races.
“Our younger throwers are continuing to improve each week. They’ve been doing great, working with Coach Mike Aagard. He concentrates on the fundamentals and by the end of the year, we’ll be showing a lot of teams that Burlington can score some valuable points in the throwing events.”
This will be a busy week for the Huskies as they will be joining 20 other teams at the Shoshoni Invite on Friday with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events starting at 11:30 a.m. They will make a quick turn around and be in Lovell on Saturday.
