McNiven breaks two state records
Wyoming State Track and Field Championships were held last weekend and the Burlington Huskies walked away with an impressive showing. The girls took 7th place overall with a total of 53 points. The boys took 2nd place overall with 127 points, just getting edged out by Saratoga with 134.5 points. “It wasn’t exactly the result the boys were hoping for, but they have a lot to be proud of,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “There were a lot of gutsy performances this year. It was great to see that grit show through, especially with the weather as unpredictable as it was.”
On the girls’ side, freshman Kelli McNiven set two new state records in the mile and two miles. “Both records were within a second of the previous records. This was especially impressive because she really didn’t have anyone to run with. But in a way, this defines Kelli. She’ll work hard, even when there isn’t someone to run with, or anybody watching. She’s just a good, solid, consistent runner who does all the necessary things to succeed.”
Other notable performances came from K. McNiven who also placed 2nd in the 800 meters. Sarah McNiven won the High Jump and the Sprint Medley Relay team, K. McNiven, Claire Philpott, Adison Haslam and S. McNiven took 4th.
On the boys’ side, freshman Kellen Winters won the 800-meter, mile and two mile and joined James McNiven, Connor Hoyt and Chase Bassett in winning the 4 X 800 meters relay. Freshman Hyrum McNiven won the triple jump with his personal best. Paul McNiven placed 2nd in the 400 meter and the 300 hurdles, 3rd in the 110-meter hurdles and 4th in the 800 meters. Bradford Davidson took 2nd in the mile and two mile and 3rd in the 800 meters. Hoyt also placed 4th in the two mile and Trigdon Aagard placed 3rd with a personal best in the high jump and joined Chase Bassett, Parker Cook and Davidson in getting 2nd in the Sprint Medley Relay.
“This was a great track season. The kids supported each other and were a lot of fun to work with. I think we’ve got some of the greatest assistant coaches and volunteer helpers as well. Our parents were wonderful as well. We’ll miss our seniors, but we expect to be back and as strong as ever next year,” said Olson.
