McNiven wins at Wyoming State Classic

The Wyoming State Classic, sometimes called “The Best of the Best,” was held Friday in Casper.  
Class 1A through 4A athletes with the top eight times or distances in the state are invited to compete. In some field events and distance races, when distances or times are close, a few more are invited to participate.
“It’s quite an honor to have one of the top eight performances in the state,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “This year we got to bring four athletes, the most we’ve ever had.”
Kyler Winters qualified in the pole vault by clearing 13 feet multiple times throughout the season. Howard McNiven and Paul McNiven both qualified in the mile. Howard previously ran a 4:49.53 and Paul a 4:50.61. Sarah McNiven held one of the top high jumps across the state with her school record breaking 5-5 clearance.
“Although none of the four got their personal best, Sarah won the high jump with the jump of 5-3. To be a freshman and to already be jumping higher than the rest of the state, is an amazing accomplishment. Sarah’s potential these next few years is through the roof.”
Winters placed seventh in the pole vault while H. McNiven placed 10th and P. McNiven 11th in the mile.
The Huskies competed at the Rocky Mountain Invitational in Cowley on Saturday. “We were missing a few kids with injuries, prom and other commitments, but it was a great day for the team,” said Olson. “Personal bests continue to mount for many of the kids, including a 58 second 400 meter for Colt Haslam and a 4:46 mile for Howard. Our throwers continue to improve and our five qualified high jumpers continue to reach impressive marks.
“I really love this time of year. The weather is warming up, track meets are more frequent, practices take on more meaning and kids are all trying to peak at the right time.”
The Huskies were in Greybull Tuesday for a triangular meet with Riverside and Greybull and will be in Thermopolis on Friday for the Bobcat Invitational with running and field events starting at 1 p.m.
