Michael Lamar Scott

1949 - 2026

Michael Lamar Scott, born May 23, 1949 in Powell, Wyoming, died May 7, 2026 in Basin, Wyoming. He lived his entire life in the State of Wyoming, except for his time served in the military.

Michael graduated from Greybull High School. He served four years in the United States Navy as a radio operator and was awarded the Silver Star for his distinguished service in Vietnam.
Michael returned to Greybull, Wyoming, where he worked and later retired from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

He dedicated 28 years as Greybull’s Emergency Management Coordinator. During that time, he assisted in the purchase and installation of two new sirens, helped make Greybull a Storm Ready Community, performed countless State WARNEX exercises, and served as a leader in the L.E.P.C. in Big Horn County.

Michael was a lifetime member of SASS (Single Action Shooting Society - cowboy action shooters). In 2014, he started the first Patriot Guard Chapter in Big Horn County. He was also a member of the MIAP (Missing In America Project - national).

He was very active with the American Legion in both Basin and Greybull, holding several offices. A longtime member of the Basin First Baptist Church, he cooked for many Men’s Breakfasts and hosted Men’s Bible studies in his home. His final church membership was with Cloud Peak Bible Church in Manderson, WY.

Michael is survived by his wife, Waynette, of 20 years; daughter Mindy (Sam) Gorden; son Hal Scott; granddaughter Allyson; grandson Colin and Rigby Edwards; stepsons Jeff (Bonnie) Edwards, Rigby Edwards, and Nick Edwards; ex-wife Paula Scott; brothers Richard Scott, Bill (Cindy) Scott, and Jim (Stacy) Scott; and nephew Ted.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at a date to be determined. Cremation has taken place at the Antelope Butte Crematory in Greybull.
