Military appreciation night Sept. 13 in Basin
The Riverside varsity football game, Sept. 13, will honor veterans and their families. This annual military appreciation night starts at 2 p.m.
Attendees are asked to dress in red, white or blue. The student council will decorate the stands and field and provide a banner honoring veterans for the football team to break through at the start of the game.
A table next to the grandstands will have Christmas ornaments that names of veterans may be written on. The ornaments will be used to create a tree at the Basin City Art Center’s Festival of Trees in November. Also at the table there will be green light bulbs for the taking. The green lights should be placed where they may be seen from the street. Green lights show support for veterans. Both the ornaments and bulbs are donated by the Basin Area Chamber.
Jars throughout the town of Basin and on the table that night will collect donations to go to local Legion posts and/or care packages should there be local soldiers be deployed during the holidays.
The American Legion Post #29 will provide a color guard to open the evening. Military recruiters will do the coin toss to start the game. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #29 will have a table with poppies; the red poppy commemorates fallen soldiers.
Veterans and their families will be recognized at halftime of the game with a song, poem and prayer. The organizers hope that veterans and their families from the Bighorn Basin and beyond come to the event.
