More Huskies qualify for State in Lovell

By Stephanie Tolman

This past weekend had the Huskies divided as they competed in the Track and Field Classic in Casper and the Lovell Invitational.

Sarah McNiven, Connor Hoyt, Howard McNiven, Kyler Winters and Weston Gotfredson were all invited to compete in Casper. “It’s quite an honor to be selected for that meet and to have five athletes from a 1A school is really impressive,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “All five athletes represented Burlington very well, with Sarah and Weston taking third place overall in their events. It’s the only meet where you truly see the ‘best of the best’ compete against each other, where the size of the school doesn’t matter. They all did a great job.”

In Lovell, the rest of the Huskies had some impressive performances. “Maddie Aagard improved her discus by 7 feet and prequalified for state,” said Olson. “Cheyenne Jordan, one of our elementary teachers, began volunteering her time and has been giving some great tips to our girl throwers. Hailee Winterholler also qualified in the discus. Between Cheyenne and fellow coach, Mike Aagard, our throwers are doing some great things this year. Matt Tempany had a 129-foot throw that pre-qualified him for state. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a sophomore throw that far. He’s such a good, coachable young man. He’s going to do some great things in the future.”

Levi Wardell improved his pole vault again this week, clearing 11-6. Freshman Bradford Davidson ran a 4:47 in the mile, qualifying him for state. Paul McNiven qualified in the 400 meters. “I think Paul could score points for us in any running event he’s entered in. It will be fun to guess which four events he can score the most points with.”

The Huskies are nearing the end of the season with their pre-regional meet this weekend. “It’s hard to believe we’re getting close to the end. We’re still working on nailing down our relays and shifting kids to events where they can help the most. I love this time of year, especially when kids are healthy, excited and chasing state trophies,” ended Olson.

Burlington will compete in Thermopolis at the Bobcat Invitational on Friday with all field events and running events starting at 1p.m.
