She was born on May 24, 1949 in Greybull, Wyo., to George Douglas and Margaret Elizabeth (Booth) Shirran.
Raised on a ranch in Hyattville, Muriel’s early years were shaped by the vast Wyoming landscapes, yet her heart always longed for the vibrant energy of city life.
After graduating, Muriel pursued her passion for education at the University of Wyoming, where she earned a degree in child education. Her journey led her to become a dedicated language arts teacher for primary and secondary education. Muriel spent the initial years of her career traveling across Wyoming, sharing her knowledge and fostering a love for language and literature in young minds.
Eventually, Muriel found her home in Riverton/Lander at Fort Washakie and St. Stephens on the reservation. She became a representative for the teacher’s union, advocating for the rights and well-being of her fellow educators. Muriel’s commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those she touched.
In her free time, Muriel indulged her love for literature, arts, and crafts. An avid collector, she had a passion for school supplies and possessed enough items to start her own school. Muriel’s talents were not limited to the academic realm; she was also a skilled seamstress. Her artistry was evident in the beautiful wedding dress she crafted for her sister, a testament to her love and dedication to family.
Muriel Ann Shirran will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to education, her love for the arts, and her vibrant spirit. Her legacy lives on in the countless students she inspired and the friendships she cultivated throughout her life.
