New Game Warden

The Greybull District of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has welcomed a new senior Game Warden, Daniel Tisi. 

His duties include law enforcement, biological surveying (counting animals like pronghorn and moose), and educational tasks such as teaching hunter safety classes.

Tisi has three and a half years of experience, having previously served as a trainee and warden in the Jackson region, where he grew up, and as a senior district warden in Cheyenne. “I’ve basically moved from one end of the state to the other. I was on the border near Idaho, then clear down to basically Nebraska and now up by Montana,” said Tisi. “I’m essentially discovering the whole state.” 

Now based in Greybull, his range extends north toward Lovell, west toward Burlington, east towards Manderson and covers portions of the Bighorn Mountains. “Oftentimes us game wardens work together with biologists and work with other districts. It’s very much a team aspect … we don’t stop at our own borders,” he added. 

An outdoorsman a heart, Tisi, spends most of his time outside for both work and in his personal life. 

“I was raised in Wilson, not far from Jackson,” he said. “Public land is what I knew. I’m a lifelong hunter, grew up doing it, I love the mountains.”

So, when a job opened in Greybull, he jumped on it, “I’m one of those guys always looking at maps and I said, ‘Greybull looks like a good spot.’ It ties in all those things I was raised on, which are mountains, public land, and go-getter type sports here…Greybull has all the things I like to do.” 

Tisi is also an avid free ride downhill skier. Having skied professionally for Teton Gravity Research. “I more or less grew up wearing ski boots more times than not,” he said. “I’m a pretty diehard skier and hunter; I love that stuff.” Noting that the Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation area was a deciding factor in Tisi relocating to Greybull. 

Being completely new to the area, Tisi has enjoyed that his job leads to meeting people. “A few days ago, I ran up Shell Canyon and checked the fishermen that just park on the side of the road and I got to talk to five different people, and it’s just kind of fun, you know. That’s probably one of my favorite parts of the job is you get to meet people while doing the job, and of course you know get to share a resource with them, I gotta share my favorite fishing spot.”

“The way I look at it, there’s only one of me, right? I got a big district. But there’s no shortage of people and sportsmen who care about the resources. So, I always say, and encourage people that no matter what they encounter in the field, if they feel like something is off or odd, call it in absolutely, and I’ll look into it,” said Tisi. 

This includes wildlife encounters in city limits as well. 

Tisi reminds hunters that need wildlife checked in, like bobcats, bears, or mountain lions, that they can stop by his home (the game warden station) in Greybull anytime.  

Certain species are required to be checked after being harvested. “Hunters are the conduit for wildlife management conservation,” he said. 

For example, when a hunter brings in a black bear, Tisi will collect teeth and tissue samples. “We’ll end up aging them and ultimately, we can create a data point based on that harvest, which then goes into further management down the line,” Tisi said. He also tracks metrics to help quotas regarding limits for the season.

“I love what I get to do for work. I’ve been spending a lot of evenings up on the mountain trying to figure out where wildlife is and seeing where they’re popping out in the evening or in the morning. Trying to get ready for hunting season,” he added.
