Nothing beats Wyoming

Hello from Mount Vernon, Virginia.

As much as I enjoyed living in Virginia for five years and visiting now, there is no place like Wyoming. At the same time, seeing our nation’s capital still chokes me up. The monuments and memorials are a beautiful sight.

The kickoff for our 50th year high school class reunion was this past weekend. Even though we graduated in 1976, our 1975 football team won state so we went to a homecoming game.  What made this game so special was that the school invited the choir members from our class to join the current choir to sing the National Anthem. One of the 1975 football players got to spend the day with the team. He also flipped the coin at the start of the game. The school also set up a special section with a welcome sign. The game announcers mentioned our group frequently. Many current students and other class alumni stopped by to say hello.

On Saturday, we took a tour of the school. Not one portion of what was our school building is left. Interestingly enough, the school was undergoing renovation construction our senior year. However, none of that building is still up. Even so, our class was represented. From photos of our classmates on the school’s athletic hall of fame to photo collages from our yearbook in the beams in the alumni hallway.

The student population was under 1,000 in the 1970s; it is now close to 3,000. After the tour, we met in the school library to remember those of our class that were no longer with us. It was extremely touching.

The only bad part about the reunion was it was attended by a bunch of “old” people. All those fresh faced 17- to -19-year-olds have turned into people quickly approaching 70!

This week, I’ll head up to Capitol Hill for lunch, then the following day, head back to our beloved Wyoming. Can’t wait to get home.
