Out with the old and in with the new
After a year, Washington Park’s playground equipment has been fully replaced.
Following community concerns about the old playground structure in the spring of 2023, Big Horn County demolished the old equipment and began prepping for the installation.
With the help of grants, the county was able to purchase and construct new equipment that was safer for the community.
“Big Horn County remains committed to improving the lives of the citizens of Big Horn County and believes Washington Park is a county and community asset that is important to our citizens,” stated County Clerk Lori Smallwood. “Maintaining the park for family picnics, community events, and safe outdoor activities is integral in ensuring our rural towns remain vibrant and connected.”
The county’s work was appreciated by parkgoer Liam Shannon. “I like the new stuff they got. I can’t wait to play on it more,” she said as she enjoyed the summer sun on her scooter.
Commissioner Deb Craft said, “The commission is very excited about the new equipment. It makes the county’s only park more family friendly. County Clerk Lori Smallwood and Maintenance Supervisor Jeremy Pouska worked very hard to get it all put together.
“We are grateful to the Wyoming Community Foundation who granted the money through the Skyes Grant. Edna and Gordon Skyes are still giving back to their community.”
The playground equipment upgrade is only the first step in the plan to make Washington Park more accessible to the public. As grant money is secured, “We intend to add additional equipment to replace items that were removed due to safety hazards caused by age,” Smallwood explained. “We also hope to secure funding to build a couple smaller covered picnic areas to augment the larger pavilion that was built by the Lions in the park years ago.”
