Responding to the plea of beet and potato growers for help to get their crops out of the ground before it freezes up, the Chamber of Commerce met on Monday and Tuesday nights and took up the matter of providing such help. Later it was shown that many hundreds of acres of beets and potatoes are still in the ground. The schools of Lovell, Powell and other places have closed for the time being that the boys might get out into the fields and help gather the crop; the Chamber went on record as in favor of doing whatever could be done. It was arranged with Supt. McNown to take the matter up with the larger boys of the school and this was done on Tuesday morning. Yesterday morning twenty boys reported for duty and were hauled to the fields. It was learned that Manderson school adjourned that the boys of that school would be able to assist.

The Basin Volunteer Fire Department answered two calls this week, neither of which resulted in serious damage due largely to prompt action on the department’s part. A call to the home of Mrs. Ray Pickett Thursday night was answered and the flames had been virtually extinguished when the firemen arrived. Sunday noon firemen were called to the CB&Q railroad depot where burning weeds had set fire to one of the telegraph posts.
For the first time in Yellowstone’s 76 years as a national park, one million visitors passed through the park’s five gateways in a single season. (I just put this in because it is so scary.)
Housewives may use DDT liberally in bringing out winter things, since it gets rid of many kinds of insects and pests. It now only kills the insects against which it is used—but remains deadly for those that will come later.
