100 years ago

July 15, 1926

People in the Greybull valley were given something of a scare on Thursday night of last week when Meeteetse telephoned that a wall of water had come down upon that place, had run over the bridge at that place and was threatening to do much damage as it passed along the way. The river began to rise at Greybull on Thursday and by Friday evening was running pretty high. On Saturday the water was running over the Yellowstone Highway this side of the bridge. Considerable damage was done in various places, but fortunately but little damage was done to bridges. Damage amounting to about $400 was done to the bridge at Otto. 

Mrs. Ellen Pennington and Mr. Herbert Deveraux were united in marriage on Saturday evening at the Baptist parsonage.

July 12, 1951

One hundred sixty-three Big Horn county 4-H club members and leaders attended the annual summer 4-H club camp on July 5,6,and 7, according to Arvil D Ashment, county agricultural agent. The camp was held at the Buffalo Bill Scout camp, west of Cody. 

4-H girls from Burlington who attended club camp last week were Emily and Norma  Preator, Betty and Sunny Allen, Ruby and Nora Mae Wardell, Geraldine Preator, Virjean Michaels, Gayle Gormley, Marietta Hibbert and Joy Michaelis. 

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Abight of the St Joe district were shopping in Basin Tuesday. Mr. Abight stated that the flume in his area had burst but that efforts to repair it were going forward despite rainy weather.

July 15, 1976

A Manderson firm was the only bidder for timber on National resource land near Hyattville, in a sale conducted by the Bureau of Land Management district office here. The “Captain Jack” timber sale offered 385,000 board feet of Douglas fir and lodgepole pine on Cold Springs road near the national forest boundary. The sole bid received was of $5,172,10 by Cowboy timber Treating Inc., he said. 

The class of 1966 gathered here for their tenth year reunion last weekend. Attending were Jerri Powers, Peggy Wood Hansen, Kathleen Morgareidge Streeter, Kathleen O’Neill Shelledy, Jana Henderson Overbeek, Jolene Presely Williams, Julie Henderson Ebzery, Sharyl Gamill Good, Virginia Morgareidge Bassett, Ron Marcus and Ben Zavorka.

The Big Horn County jail is still ahead of schedule and should be completed under budget, county officials said last week. 

Basin Town Council members agreed to seek bids for crack sealing of the town’s streets after they received a proposal to do that work. Wyoming Asphalt maintenance had submitted a proposal to crack seal eight miles of streets in Basin at a cost of $2,350 per ton. The Cowley business also proposed crack sealing of 2,500 feet of the town’s walking path on the west side for a total price of $3,600. Councilman Jerry Pyle said the council needs bids not a quote. Pyle disagreed with the timeing for the crack sealing. Pyle said it should occur when the daytime temperatures run between 20 and 30 degrees, not during hot weather.
