100 years ago

August 12, 1926

A letter from Mr. H.G. Shedd of Omaha brings the information that the pastures have been badly burned in the states of the Mississippi valley and that there is a shortage of hay. Word comes from Powell that the alfalfa mill is paying $9 a ton. Over on the Clark’s Fork hay in the stack is selling for $7. (That would be about $132.07 today)

Mr. Kullen of the Larson & Jorgensen Company was here this week from Casper looking after operations at the State Tuberculosis Sanatorium. He informed us that work was going along nicely, and that they would make good headway from now on. The concrete floor for the second floor is being poured this week and plastering will be begun within the nest few days. 

75 Years ago

August 9, 1951

Three Basin servicemen arrived home on furloughs during the last week. Privates First Class Bert Gilmore and Harvey Blank arrived in Basin Friday afternoon from Fort Campbell, Ky., where they are stationed as paratroopers. Private First Class Richard Bryson, also of Fort Cambpell, arrived Friday evening. The trio expect to leave on Monday.

Corporal William Dorton landed in San Francisco, Cal., last Thursday after serving with United States forces in the Pacific since October 15 of last year He left San Francisco Friday for Camp Carson near Colorado Springs, Colo., where he expects to receive honorable discharge within the next few days. 

The sudden hail and rain storm that swept over Otto and surrounding vicinity Tuesday came with great force and was one of the old-fashioned gully-washing type. As it subsided and moved to the north and east of us, we noticed tourists from the eastern states taking pictures of the clouds which carried the storm along. 

50 years ago

August 12, 1976

Dave Olsen, son of Mrs. Lucretia Olsen of Basin, was injured last Wednesday night when the motorcycle he was riding struck a deer, near the south Big Horn County Hospital. Dave was thrown from the cycle, and the deer escaped, apparently unharmed. Dave was aided and moved from the lane of traffic, by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Agnew, Jack Webster, Adrian Howe, Bill and Cindy Davis and Paul Cavender. He was admitted to the hospital and was still there for treatment as of Monday.

John Ed Anderson, Shell, placed first in competition with seven other 4-H’ers from Big Horn and Fremont counties, at the District 4-H Tractor Contest held at Riverton last week. Big Horn County 4-H’ers under the leardership of Howard Gernant, placed high in the contest. Victor Werbelow placed third; Todd Werbelow, fourth; Mike Kelso fifth; and Curtis Gernant, sixth.

For the second straight year gross sales were up at the Big Horn County Fair Junior Livestock Sale. Total sales for the 2001 sale totaled $111,036, compared to $109,232 in 2000.

Kathleen Nichols, food service manager at the Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin, was recently named the Wyoming certified dietary manager of the year. Nichols war nominated by the administrators and employees at the Wyoming Retirement Center.
