April 3, 1924
Messrs. J.A. Berry and P.P. Anderson of the Basin State Bank went out to the old Lyman ranch, south of Otto, on Tuesday and sold eight acres, which was a part of that ranch to Mr. Ed Young. This land adjoins the ranch of Mr. D.D. Young and Ed bought it so that it might be worked along with the old homestead. This is the first sale of land this Spring in this section. The price is $30 per acre and considering its distance from the railroad, it is regarded as a sign of returning good times.
The ice went out of the river between here and Manderson during the past week. There still remains a gorge about three miles long just this side of Greybull and some fears are entertained that it may do some damage, but a close watch is being kept and it is hoped that trouble may be averted.

Mr. R.J. O’Neill, Americanism Chairman for the Auxiliary to Marion Tanner Unit No. 29 of the American Legion, announced this week the winners of the essay contest. Grand prize places go to Kathryn Whitlock and Frankie Jo Russell. Senior high school prizes were won by Kathryn Whitlock and second prize went to Barbara Ellison. Winners of the Junior High division were Frankie Jo Russell and Loy Harris. Hyattville Senior High School winners were Jack Lester and Lorraine Thomas. Dick Mercer won first and Donald Cornett won second place in the Junior High School.

Steve Gorm of Basin has been presented with an award in recognition of his 25 years of accident free service with the Burlington Northern railroad, it was learned this week. The division superintendent at Missoula, Mont., presented Gorm with a silver tie clip on behalf of the Roads Safety Division.
Tom Schwartz, so of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Schwartz of Manderson and a Casper College student, has been elected for inclusion in the forthcoming edition of “Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges.” He is among 10 Casper College students to be so honored and the only Casper College student from this area to be chosen. Tom is a sophomore studying agriculture.

The following Riverside High School Students have been named to the third quarter straight-A honor roll: Sarah Bayert, Robbie Evans, Ann Godfrey, Heidi Griffith, Lance Hopkin, Kelli Pederson, Michelle Vigil, Elisa Farlow, Hannah Irvine, Liz Kidner, Jeff McKim, Kelli Skarda, Anna Bayert, and Tara Jones.
Jack Clucas is no longer on active status with the South Big Horn County Search and Rescue [SAR] squad, but don’t say he’s retired. After 27 years with SAR, Clucas was presented with a plaque of appreciation for his years of service at a meeting held in January. At an annual meeting and election of officers, the SAR by-laws were amended to allow members with more than 20 years of volunteer work, to retire, so to speak, while retaining their membership in an advisory capacity.
