100 years ago

June 12, 1924

Basin finds itself with but one bank, the Basin State Bank, recently organized and presenting a clean slate with all losses incident to readjustment absorbed by the unfortunates who were back of it when the crash came. The Rustler believes that today it is the duty of every individual interested in the welfare of our community to get behind the Basin State Bank and give it every possible support. 

The Rustler is in receipt of a letter from Mr. R.W. Forshee of Plainview, Neb., in which he calls attention to the fact that his father, Spencer Forshee, is among the civil war veterans who lie in Mountain View Cemetery. 

City and county authorities have had their attention called to the fact that young boys are jumping on and off the local freight train as it passes through Basin in the mornings and afternoons. This is a very dangerous practice and parents are warned that boys should be cautioned against it. 

75 years ago

June 8, 1949

At 5:30 Saturday morning, 28 members of the high school band assembled to travel to Billings to march in the annual Go-Western parade under the direction of band director Roger Pelton. The band arrived at 9:30 and, at 10 o’clock, they marched approximately two miles in the parade. 

Miss Betty English and Miss Ethel Parkin were selected to represent Basin at Girls State.

Harry B. Highland, United States Navy, arrived in Basin Saturday to spend a 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Highland of Manderson. Harry has been stationed at the navy base in Tsingtao, China for the last year. 

50 years ago

June 12, 1974

Arlie Hammons, a Wyoming native, has been chosen as Basin’s new superintendent of schools, it was learned following a school board meeting on Tuesday evening. 

Area students listed on the Dean’s honor roll at the University of Wyoming include: Kathleen J. Brown, Marilyn Sue Darr, Lori A Moberly, Therese M. Shimogake and Philip T. Wilson, all of Basin, Diane Frabricus of Burlington, Nancy Renner, D. Lynn Paumer, and Steven B. Tharp, of Hyattville. 

A bridal shower honoring Miss Jill Jane McMillan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey McMillan of Powell, who is the bride-elect of Guy Edwin Tharp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Tharp of Manderson, was held at the Hyattville Elementary school, Monday evening, June 3. 

Dawn Johnson of Basin is listed on the President’s honor roll at Northwest Community College. Others listed on the regular honor roll include: Becky Breining, Loren Evans and Debra Hartman of Basin, Carol Carrizales and Patricia Norby of Emblem, Jack Harrington of Manderson and James McNiven of Burlington. 

25 years ago

June 8, 1999

Eighty-seven years is a lot of years of experience and that experience will be lost to Dist. 4 next year. Even though that 87 years is a combination of the experience of Don Cherni, 25-year music educator, Jim Willis, 30 years teaching elementary students and Deanna Caines who spent 32 years teaching children from fifth through eighth grade. All three are retiring this year.
