100 years ago

December 11, 1924

Messrs. Otto Plaga, J.A. Carlson and two other officers of the federal Prohibition Enforcement Department were here last week following raids in Washakie County, in which they successfully located two stills. At Chatham, they got Milton Winchester with a still on the stove, 120 gallons of mash and some whiskey. Peter Dellos and his wife were caught with a 20-gallon still, a quantity of mash and some whiskey. 

The Basin Bobcat Basketball team for 1924-25 season includes Burl Jones, Buster Evans, Jimmie Keachie Charles Reidl, George Marple, Harry Sweeney, Milton Smith, and Paul Wilson.

December 8, 1949

Another illustration of why the Big Horn Basin is often referred to as “The Banana Belt” was made known this week when Mrs. Don C. Parkin reported dandelions blooming on the courthouse lawn in Basin. 

Claude Gould, who moved recently from Hyattville to Greybull, has reportedly found a pair of binoculars which he lost in October of 1948 on a sheep trail in the Hyattville country. The glasses, which were valued at $50 ,were completely destroyed. Mr. Gould stated that the binoculars show evidence that a bear came upon them and caused the damage. 

David Kost, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ned F. Kost Sr., sustained a broken ankle in a mishap during the Bobcats’ basketball game with the Wyoming Industrial Institute played in Basin last Thursday evening.

December 12, 1974

An agreement reached out of court has brought an apparent end to controversy surrounding school district reorganization plans in Big Horn County for the past three years. District Judge Harold Joffee, on Monday, dismissed a suit challenging the state-ordered 4-district plan for the county. 

Basin’s traditional Christmas public lighting display blazed to life Saturday night and will be lit nightly until the end of the holiday season.

Members of the Basin Rotary Club were treated to an exhibition of square dancing by members of the Basin fourth grade last Thursday. Taking part were Kendall Anderson, Jeff Asay, Christie Christopherson, Jim Doerr, Jerry Hopkin, Mary Kost, Tracy McCullough, Barbara Michaels, Sharon Patterson, Jill Saldana, Frank Trenkle, Charles Whitacre, Laura Averett, Leon Blaleck, Allen Brown, Mike Ellison, Ray Heiser, Therese Holland, Eric Lampman, Theresa Martin, Jay Miller, Chris Pyle, Carolyn Raffl, Shawna Sanders, Scott Striker, Kellie Triplett, Rick Greenfield, Terry Johnson and Marsh Kestner.

December 9, 1999

The Riverside Academic Challenge team, composed of Anna Bayert, Alex Nauman, Lisa Frame and Tim Hagemeister, placed seventh overall at the Wyoming Academic Challenge held at Eastern Wyoming College on Dec. 4. 

Twelve Riverside High School students attended the Northern Big Horn Basin District Music Clinic last month. Attending were band members Betsy Crosby, Kyle Tate, Leanna Stanley, Marisa Ruhter, Reid Stidolph, Alex Nauman and Jennifer Cooper. Choir members attending were Jennifer Jacobs, Dani Paulley, Elisa Farlow, Tara Jones and Rich Robbins.
