100 years ago

December 18, 1924

While returning from Greybull on Monday night in her Ford sedan, Miss Wilma Skovgard had the misfortune to strike a horse, which all at once loomed up from nowhere and walked onto the road at the bottom of the hill this side of Greybull. The car hit the horse hard, knocking it down and running up on top of it where it remained. Miss Wilma was badly cut by the glass from the windshield and it was found necessary to take several stitches in the right side of her face. Dr. C.E. Harris also spent an hour picking glass out of the wound, some of it right under the eye.

75 years ago

December 15, 1949

On Saturday night, the Basin High school junior class will present the play, “Love Is Too Much Trouble.” The cast includes: Dick Bratton, Bill Richey, Sharon Weaver, Adella Boelens, Ronald Harless, Phyllis Caines, Lorraine Thomas, Margaret Ruff, Clara Hazen, Niki Davies, Betty Ann Gilmore, Harvey Johnston, Helen Williams and Duane Seymour. 

The meeting of the Basin FFA chapter was called to order at 7:30 last Thursday. We drew for our pens in the feedyard, all projects have to be started by December 15. James Berry and Ned Kost spoke to the members about how to care for their projects. And on Friday, the members and Mr. Asay, our instructor, went to the Greybull sales ring to purchase some livestock for their projects. 

50 years ago

December 19, 1974

The new Town of Basin garbage packer has gone into service following completion of a lease-purchase agreement with Core Chevrolet and already received its baptism of fire. The packer was being used to pick up garbage in the business district last Wednesday when a barrel of still smoldering trash was loaded. The fire quickly spread to trash already loaded and smoke poured from the garbage truck. The load was quickly ejected in the alley behind the town of Basin offices and no damage was done. The trash had later to be loaded by backhoe into a dump truck. 

Steel for the Big Horn Rural electric Company’s new 8-vehicle garage and storage shed has arrived on the construction site south of the L.A. Clawson residence. Work will begin next Monday, according to the schedule and the structure is to be complete on or shortly after January 1.

December 16, 1999

Tim Graham and Mark Boyles were appointed to fill two open vacancies on the District 4 board of trustees Tuesday night, and Cecil Mullins was elected chairman in the board’s annual reorganization. Graham and Boyles were elected by secret ballot following the acceptance of the resignations of Linda Harp and Bill Stoelk.

The main water line into Basin was shut down for most of the day last Thursday due to a break just south of town. Mike Dellos, water plant supervisor, said the break was apparently caused by a “rolled gasket,” which caused the pipe to weaken and eventually collapse. The water was shut off from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. while the line was being repaired. Dellos said only two customers and the Town of Basin were affected by the shutdown, but there was no inconvenience to residents because there was adequate water stored to supply the town during the repairs.
