100 years ago

October 2, 1925

Mr. Thos. M Hyde last week received notice from Mrs. Mills, clerk of the State Board of Charities and Reform, that the bond executed in Basin has been received and approved by the attorney general and that it was expected that the transfer of the land upon which the State Tuberculosis Sanatorium is to be built would be completed by the meeting of the board on the first Monday in October. It is understood that the plans of the board for a 40-bed hospital have been completed, and that this wing will be completed next summer. 

Little Miss Asta Marie Beck underwent an operation for appendicitis on Monday morning at the Basin Hospital. The appendix was found ruptured, but she is reported as making a very satisfactory recovery.

75 years ago

September 28, 1950

Nine persons enrolled last week in the home nursing course begun at Basin High School by the Basin district chapter of the American National Red Cross. The class is expected to increase this week because of a nursery established by the chapter to care for the youngsters of women wishing to enroll. Mrs. Lucy A Hoover will have charge of the nursery. Indications are that a similar class will begin soon at Burlington High School. The instructor of the classes will be Mrs. Garland G. Smith. 

The names of two Wyoming servicemen were carried on the Department of Defense casualty roles last night — both missing in action. Private first class Samuel L. Wolfe, son of Mrs. Mayme S. Wolfe, of Basin and Captain Cyril S. Bartholdi, of Rock Springs, were reported missing.

Members of the Burlington FFA chapter will go to Laramie Wednesday for the state judging contest. Stock judging team includes Udell McIntosh, Mads Cottrell, Dale Aagard and Gordon Hodson. Farm mechanics judges will be Bernard Johnson and Oliver Peterson, Jr. The boys will be accompanied by their instructor, Vern Tolman.

October 2, 1975

Mike Dellos and Vicki Lynam, both seniors, were selected as homecoming king and queen. Senior attendants were Tom Pearl and Jeri Back while attendants from the junior class were Brian Hawks and Tish Williamson. Tadd Estes and Kellie Davis were chosen as sophomore attendants and those from the freshman class were Laine Anderson and Andrea Williamson. 

Coach Jim Gibbs’ junior high football team racked up its fourth straight win last Thursday by defeating Byron 36-6.

Even as the snow was falling on Friday, a Basin town crew had begun the process of picking up broken branches and limbs that had snapped and fallen into streets, alleyways and sidewalks from the weight of the snowfall, according to a town official. 

County officials have cancelled the ban on open fires that was passed earlier this summer. The ban was lifted as of 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25. County Fire Warden Brent Godfrey announced the lifting of the ban. Recent cooler weather and precipitation allowed officials to cancel the ban, according to Godfrey.
