Poppy Day, Month Proclaimed in Basin
Basin Mayor CJ Duncan proclaimed Nov. 3 Poppy Day and the entire month of November Poppy Month during a special signing at the Oct. 16 council meeting.
According to the proclamation, The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary adopted the memorial poppy as its memorial flower in 1919 and “whereas by wearing the poppy, Americans everywhere and especially in this City of Basin both pay tribute to these war dead and aid the living by providing assistance to veterans and their families in time of need: and whereas the Poppy Day Program contributions are used solely for the programs of veterans affairs and rehabilitation in our community and state; Mayor Duncan proclaims the month and day as Poppy Month and Poppy Day and urges “all citizens of our town to join with me in wearing of the memorial flower as together we remember the sacrifices of so many in defense of our freedom”.
Members of the Marion Tanner Unit No 29 of the American Legion Auxiliary attended the meeting for the proclamation. They are also seeking donations for the annual poppy drive. The funds are used to support veterans as well as active military and their families. The drive will be conducted Nov. 3. Monies are used for the Christmas donations to local veterans in the Wyoming Retirement Center, cookies and clothing/shoes for the veterans in the Sheridan VA Medical Center and the Veterans Home of Wyoming in Buffalo; care packages for local and abroad active military, veterans and families. Money raised may only be spent to support veterans and military and their families. The poppies that are distributed during the drive are made by veterans in the Veterans Home of Wyoming in Buffalo.
