Public comment is now open on SBHC landfill expansion
Public comment is open through June 15 on a permit amendment for the South Big Horn County construction and demolition landfill. The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality relayed in a press release that the proposed amendment would allow the landfill to increase its disposal capacity by constructing an additional disposal area.
“The C and D pit we currently have is about to be full,” landfill manager Gary Grant said. “Any time you expand your footprint, you have to do a DEQ permit.”
Grant explained that currently, household garbage on the south end of the county is transported to the north end for disposal. Construction materials are buried instead. The land the expansion would be built on is currently owned by the county, adding about 5-6 acres to the 12.45-acre facility located between Basin and Greybull of Highway 20. A cost estimate was not provided before press time.
“The [DEQ] Solid and Hazardous Waste Division has determined that the major permit amendment application is generally complete and technically adequate. Therefore, DEQ has issued a proposed major amendment for this facility,” the department’s notice reads.
Public comment may be submitted up until 5 p.m. on June 15 in writing to the Department of Environmental Quality, Todd Parfitt, Director, 200 West 17th Street, Cheyenne, WY 82002 or by using the DEQ comment portal at https://shw.wyomingdeq.commentinput.com/.
