Rebels celebrate their seniors, drop close one to Huskies

By Michael Tanner

Friday February 21st,

The Riverside Rebels celebrated their seniors and fought hard in their Feb. 21 game against the Burlington Huskies, gaining a two-point lead in the first quarter and trading leads until the fourth quarter when the Huskies pulled away to win, 51-46.

“We have seven seniors this year ... it was good to recognize all of them for their hard work over the years,” Coach Scott Winters said of the group, which includes Hyson Hill, Avery Clifford, Jon Mendenhall, Wyatt Daly-Patterson, Ryder Kozisek, Lane Owen and Matthew Brown.

In regard to the game against Burlington, Winters said, “Overall we played a really good game and I was pleased with how well we played as a team and worked together both offensively and defensively. It came down to the last few minutes and Burlington started to use a lot of clock each possession when they had the lead and we unfortunately ran out of time and weren’t able to get the win, but we competed to the end.”

Coach Winters added; “Ryder Kozisek had a really strong game offensively for us. Hyson Hill played great defensively and was able to get some transition baskets for us as well. Paul Stone and Avery Clifford did a great job of rebounding and I thought all the guys off the bench contributed.”

With the loss, the Rebels were forced into a regional tournament play-in game Monday  against Meeteetse, which they won 34-32.  They’re lined up to face Cokeville today (Thursday, Feb. 27) in the opening round of the Class 1A West Regional.
