Rebels win two of first three

Riverside booked two wins and one loss at its opening tournament of the year, beating Midwest 60-33 and Arvada Clearmont 59-14 while losing to Upton 63-25.

Coach Scott Winters said the Rebels started off a little nervous against Midwest and had some unforced turnovers but steadied themselves and built a lead on their way to a 60-33 win.

“Wyatt and Avery set the tone for us offensively early,” said Winters, adding that with the game in hand, everyone  had some playing time

On Saturday, the Rebels started out playing Arvada Cleamont.

Coach Winters shared, “They are having a down year, they only have 7 boys, and it wasn’t the most competitive game but we were able to practice lots of different offensive and defensive sets and get some of our more inexperienced guys some minutes.”

“Ryder led our team in scoring and the whole team was able to contribute positively.”

The Rebels finished the weekend playing Upton, the No. 1 team in the state.

Winters said,  “Brandon Powell hit a couple of big 3’s for us to get up on the board” and “Paul Stone had a good offensive game as well,” but it wasn’t enough as Upton rolled to the 38-point victory.

Summing up the three outings, Winters said, “It was a good opening week for us in terms of seeing where we are at and where we need to improve if we want to compete with the top teams in the state.”
