The current Basin City Arts Center (BCAC) board and volunteers have created a Monthly Donor Circle to help keep the center going.
The center has no paid staff, but events, rental, programs and fundraisers do not cover expenses.
The yearly expense of the elevator is $3,600. The electric bill runs $4,200 for the year. The yearly expense for Wyoming Gas is $4,500. The insurance runs $1,000 a year.
By creating the donor circle, the hope is that people will set up with their bank a monthly donation to the center. Volunteer Jennifer Miller said any amount would be appreciated.
HISTORY
The building was originally called Fraternity Hall and was bult in 1902.  That same year, the Gorman Murder Trial was held there. James Gorman had murdered his brother Tom on Broken Back Creek. He had become infatuated with his brother’s wife.
In April of 1909, seven “cowmen” attacked a sheep camp south of Ten Sleep near Spring Creek. This trail was also held at the BCAC.
For years, the building was the Wigwam Theatre. It was owned by Clara and Les Mercer who also owned the drive-in theatre in Basin. The theatre closed in the 1980s.
The Town of Basin owned the building for years and then scheduled it for destruction. Many citizens didn’t want this to happen and worked hard to make it become the BCAC. The renovation and restoration of the first floor started in 1998 after the town received a $150,000 grant from the Wyoming Business Council. The theatre was restored. The BCAC became a nonprofit in 2000.
With a grant from the Wyoming Business Council, the second story/ballroom renovation was completed.  The beautiful ballroom has become a favorite for proms, weddings and black-tie events. Richard Russell married Cassie Spragg there Dec. 29, 2001, calling it the best day of his life.
Those interested in donating may send donations to Basin City Arts Center, P.O. Box 817, Basin, WY, 82410, or set up donations through their bank.
Those wanting to volunteer are welcome to come to the monthly board meeting, which are always the first Thursday on the month at 5 p.m. Bingo is always the first Tuesday of each month; doors open at 6 p.m.
