With a big assist from their south Big Horn County contributors, the Worland Warriors captured fourth place in the girls division and fifth in the boys at last weekend’s Indoor 3A Track and Field Championships in Gillette.

Cade Bell, the team’s only import from Riverside High School, won the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 4 1/4 inches. He had the top throw going in, a 49-1 3/4, and bettered it to hold off his closest pursuer and teammate Anthony Cheatham, who threw 50-5 1/4.  Bell earned all-state honors.

“So excited for Cade,” said Coach Tracey Wiley. “We knew he could throw over 50, but just hadn’t done it yet in a meet.

“He has worked hard all season and is very passionate about the shot.”

Greybull’s Carter Peasley placed in two events, taking second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches, and 15th in the long jump, going 17-9 3/4.

“Carter is one of the most coachable kids we’ve had — he worked all these last 10 weeks,” Wiley said. “It was so fun to see him get second in the high jump and earn all-state. I told him his outdoor goal should be 6-2, which I know he can get.”

Jesse Brown competed in four events, finishing 17th in the 55 meters (7.12 seconds) and 18th in the 200 meters (24.81, a personal best). He also ran on Worland’s sprint medley relay team, which placed third, and 1,600 meter relay team, which was ninth and featured included Peasley and Henri Maas.

Speaking of Brown, Wiley said, “That kid will do anything for you. I texted him before state and said, ‘Hey, I want to put a 4x400 together. Would you run a 400?’  He said, ‘You bet!  Anything to help the team out!’  Man, you can’t coach that.  As a coach, you love kids like that.

“While we were just shy by one place of getting on the podium, I was proud of Jesse and Carter willing to be a part of that relay.  Had we had a time and been placed in the faster heat, I really feel we would have been in the top eight. But not having run that this season, we entered as a NT (no time).”

Maas also placed in two individual events, finishing 25th in the 400 (1:04.27) and 25th in the 800 (2:34.61).

Among south Big Horn County athletes, Wyatt Whaley was the top contributor on the girls’ side, placing fifth in the shot put with a heave of 35 feet, 6 inches.

“I knew she would be up on that podium at state as she has worked hard all season,” said Wiley. “With her going to Simplot, I think that was a big motivator and confidence booster for her. She’s only a junior and will continue to get stronger and better over time.”

Wiley ended saying, “I’m super proud of all the kids that came to us from Greybull and Basin.  It was fun to get to know them.  I told them I will look forward to watching them in outdoor.  I want to thank Coach Mike Whaley for coming to Worland four days a week to work with the throwers.  I couldn’t have done it without him.”
