Scouts work to replenish food banks

The Basin-Greybull Girl Scout Troop 1341 recently met at Lynn’s SuperFoods in Greybull, where they began by decorating a cart for a food drive to help replenish local food banks after the holidays.

According to troop leader Gloria Marcus, the girls agreed in advance to use money from their candy and nut sales last fall for this community service project.

At Lynn’s, they were paired up and encouraged to shop for nonperishable food items.  The goal was to see how many items they could purchase for $25. Brownie Scout Jordyn Stamsted along with Daisy Scout Bridgette Marcus had the most with 14 items.

Last fall, Girl Scouts from Basin and Greybull visited and toured the Greybull Community Outreach thrift store and food bank, where Cris from the store taught them how to pack a box that could feed a family of four for two weeks.  The Greybull food bank provides 20-30 food boxes per month for families. The girls also learned how the outreach store plays a crucial role in providing money to purchase food for the food bank.

Lori Thon attended a Girl Scout meeting and brought pictures of the Basin food bank for the girls to see.  Thon brought a bag of food and taught the Girl Scouts the difference between perishable and nonperishable food items.  The girls learned about the community Thanksgiving dinner, and Christmas baskets that Basin provides and hopes to help with these next fall.

According to Marcus, Troop 1341 is a multi-level troop with girls from kindergarten the sixth grade who are considered Daisys, Brownies and  Juniors.

“We currently have 10 Girl Scouts and one tagalong (a younger sister of a registered Girl Scout with a parent volunteer),” said Marcus. “I also have 3 amazing parent volunteers/leaders.”

The troop is currently conducting its annual cookie sale. If you’d like to order, contact a Scout or look for its cookie booth at Lynn’s on Saturday, March 22 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, March 28 from 2 to 6 p.m., as well as at Wheeler’s in Basin on Saturday, March 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
