Cowboy Jayce Sorensen, of Greybull, was named the all-around champion at the Big Horn County Fair Rodeo on Saturday evening in Basin and was awarded the Casey Good memorial buckle.

Sorensen placed first in team roping with partner JT Collingwood and third in the same event with partner Clark Hufty. He placed third in mixed team roping with partner Louie Nichols. For his individual event, Sorensen placed second in calf roping.

Lacee Good, of Shell, won the women’s breakaway event for the second year in a row, besting her time from last year with a time of 3.73 seconds.

Adan Cisneros, of Basin, won the saddle bronc competition with a score of 56 points.

Lovell’s team Bad Company won the wild horse race. Members included Burl Twitchell, Monte Blank, and JL Miller.

Cowley seven-year-old Axton Henson won the sheep riding competition.

Organizer Ronna Collingwood said, “Fair rodeo was good.”

During the bull riding contest, Braxdon Patterson of Greybull was bucked off and stomped on, requiring attention from the local EMTs. A heart-stopping silence fell across the stadium, with cowboy hats held over chests as Patterson received an ambulance ride out of the arena.

“As a mom, I felt the power of prayer in the arena, there are no other words after rewatching the video of the bull stomping on him. Our Lord in Christ kept him safe that night,” said Bridgett Patterson.

The bull, named Wolf Trap, weighs in at around 1,800 pounds.

Braxdon, 19, was wearing his protective bull rider vest. Wolf Trap stomped on his shoulder and on his lower back. He doesn’t have any fractures, just two abrasions. “That’s why gear is so important, if he didn’t have that vest on him, it could have killed him, but that vest absorbed the impact,” said Bridgett. “He’s healthy, he’s good, but he’s beat up and sore. He was back at work on Monday morning. Unfortunately, with bull riding; it’s not if you get hurt, it’s when and how bad.”

The rodeo was the seventh of nine regular season stops on the Big Horn Rodeo Circuit. The final two will be in Thermopolis Saturday, Aug. 15 and in Meeteetse on Monday, Sept. 7, Labor Day. The circuit finals, where only the top 10 athletes qualify, is set for Saturday, Sept. 19 in Thermopolis.
