A successful hunt could help nourish hungry families

Hunt, donate and nourish with the Wyoming First Lady’s Food from the Field program. Perhaps you love to hunt but don’t need the meat. The Wyoming Hunger Initiative, Wyoming Game & Fish, Wyoming Department of Ag and local processors make it possible for game meat to be donated to food pantries.  Meat is one of the greatest needs for food pantries partly due to the expense.

Hunters may donate all or part of the meat to the program. The participating processers prepare it, and the meat is then given to organizations that help those with food insecurity. Of course, moose, elk and deer are tested for CWD first.

Several food pantries in Big Horn County have received the donated meat in the past. The cost of the processing is paid for through the sale of Game & Fish Commissioner tags, donations by the hunter or donations from the community.

The Basin Area Food Pantry is always grateful for meat donations if they are processed by a licensed plant. The families that receive the meat are thankful as well.

Paintrock Processing in Hyattville and Wapiti Valley Meats are currently the only participating Food from Field processors in the Big Horn Basin. There are processors in Evansville, Burns, Thayne, Riverton, Cheyenne, Afton, Gillette, Chugwater and Douglas.

May you have a successful hunt and thank you for your consideration of donating to help those experiencing food insecurity.
