Susan Ann Shuman

Dec. 10, 1956 - Dec. 16, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Ann Shuman, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who departed this life Dec. 16, 2025, just after her 69th birthday. Born on Dec. 10, 1956, Susan lived a life as rich and vibrant as the gardens she so cherished, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Susan made her home in Basin, Wyo., but her spirit was unbound, marked by an extraordinary series of adventures. For 33 years, she skillfully navigated the highways as a long-haul truck driver, a testament to her strength and independence. In the early 1980s, her adventurous spirit led her to live and work on a gold mine. Later that decade, alongside her beloved husband and two young children, she owned and operated a commercial fishing boat along the West Coast, creating a lifetime of unique memories. Susan also pursued her education, attending college in the early 80s, always seeking to learn and grow.

A true earth spirit, Susan found her deepest joy and peace in her garden, a lifelong dream that she finally brought to fruition. Known affectionately as “Nana,” she could often be found nurturing her flowers, with her magnificent mammoth sunflowers standing as a vibrant reflection of her own radiant personality. Her hands were rarely idle, finding solace and creativity in crafting and sewing, meticulously making cherished Christmas gifts for all her “babies” every year.

Susan was a deeply spiritual woman, incredibly in tune with the earth, pouring love and light onto everyone around her. She found joy in practicing healing of the mind and body for herself and her loved ones. For 47 years, she shared a beautiful and adventurous partnership with her husband, Steven Scott Shuman, exploring the wonders of the Big Horn Mountains together and building a life filled with laughter and shared experiences.

A beautiful woman with an equally beautiful spirit, Susan was known for being fun, loving, and, when necessary, wonderfully spicy. She was a fighter who worked hard throughout her life but always reminded those she loved that it’s okay not to be strong all the time. Her legacy is one of unwavering love, enduring strength, and the quiet wisdom to embrace vulnerability.

Susan will be dearly missed by her devoted husband, Steven Scott Shuman, and her loving children: daughter Aimee Marie McMillen and husband Jeremiah McMillen of Casper, Wyo., son Steven Scott Shuman and wife Wendy Shuman of Billings, Mont., and stepdaughter Stephanie Shuman of Basin, Wyo. Her spirit will live on through her 10 cherished grandchildren, Deanna, Ashly, Chelsy, Richard, Samantha, Tristian, Nikole, Emmanuel, Jesse, and Breanna, as well as her 21 great-grandchildren, and one precious great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by her brothers, Roger Swagerty and Stanley Swagerty.

She was preceded in death by her father, Boyd Thomas Swagerty; her mother, Shirley Ann Swagerty; her sister, Victoria Swagerty, and her brother, Steve Swagerty.

Susan’s soul will forever live on in the hearts of all who were touched by her extraordinary love and light. Her memory will continue to inspire us to live fully, love deeply, and always find joy in the simple beauty of a blooming garden.
