Swimming with the mermaids makes a splash in Basin

The Basin Rec Pool hosted Swim with Mermaids events Aug. 1 and 8.

The pool was filled.  A family from Lovell and another from Powell said they came over just for the event. Another family was in Basin visiting and happened to be at the pool - much to the delight of their daughter Maven Cattaneo. She said she liked the mermaids and has a mermaid costume at home. Several boys who came to the pool that day told pool staff they were not there because of the mermaids.

MauRena Scott, The Wyoming Mermaid, recently had two graduates from the PADI Mermaid class she taught: Hadley Hopkin of Basin and Erin Gerhart of Greybull.

Hopkin said she took the class because she loves being in the water. She added that the class teaches how to save people who are scuba diving. There is a proper swim for it. Her mermaid name is, The Sunshine Mermaid. “Like the Sunshine Reservoir.”

Gerhart is The Yellowstone Mermaid.  When asked why she wanted to take the course, she called it “everyone’s childhood dream” and said “it is very fun.” She has a background in snorkeling.

Scott is very excited about her “little merlings” and hopes they will continue on their journey to become fully certified mermaids.  She is also planning to teach classes next year in Basin.
