Three win titles on home mats for Greybull-Riverside

Greybull-Riverside won three individual titles and placed seventh as a team at its annual memorial tournament held Saturday at Buff Gym.
Tawny Bertolini and Gabby Dowling reigned in the girls division and Ty Strohschein was the only wrestler to break through in the varsity boys division.
Moorcroft dominated the 13-team field, earning 205 points.  Thermopolis was second with 171.5, followed by Lovell with 86, Lander Valley with 71.5, Powell with 71 and Dubois with 68.
G-R scored 58 on a day in which several regulars were either out or dealing with sickness. Loomis Alexander, the No. 4-ranked 138 pounder in the state, was among those who sat out.
“We’ve just got to get healthy — that’s my biggest concern at this point,” said Coach Rob Nuttall. “It was a tough tournament. Not the biggest, but a lot of quality teams.
“I like the way we battled, though.  I definitely don’t think it was our best performance by any means, but at the same time, there’s value in coming out when things aren’t going your way or you feel like crap and finding a way through it.”
No one did a better job of finding a way than the three champions.
Bertolini pinned all three of her opponents at 130, including Tessa Farnsworth of Moorcroft in the final.
Dowling was one of only three wrestlers at 135 pounds so a round robin rather than a bracket was used to determine the champion.  Dowling emerged with a 2-0 mark. Like Bertolini left no doubt, pinning all comers.
Ty Strohschein racked up four wins on the day, making quick work of his first three opponents before being taken to the brink by Siler Hess of Dubois in the final.  Strohschein prevailed 13-12, improving to 24-6.
“All three of our champions wrestled good tournaments,” said Nuttall. “As with any week, though ,all three of them have little things they need to work on to get where we want to go.”
G-R’s other varsity placers included freshman Bennett Sanford and sophomore Caiden Sorenson. Each went 4-1 on the day. For Sorenson, that was good for third at 150, and for Sanford, fourth at 126.
Heavyweight Curtis Strohschein also found himself in the third-place match after tough loss to Elyott Gorsuch of Moorcroft in the semifinals, a wrestler he’d beaten at a dual the night before. Strohschein ended on a high note, notching a 2-1 win in the third-place match.
Other varsity wrestlers included Reece Whisenant, who went 0-2 at 144; Garrett Wiggins, 0-2 at 150, and Camden Schriner, 0-2 at 190.
In JV competition, 132-pounder Carter Peasley went 2-1 and placed second at 132 pounods.  Sy Schlattmann, at 126, went 1-2 and earned third.
G-R has just a single dual on this week’s slate as it hosts Worland today (Thursday, Feb. 8) at 5 p.m. at Riverside High School. Beyond that, Nuttall welcomes the prospect of an open weekend, calling it “a good opportunity to get rested up and healed up so that we can hit the postseason at 100 percent.”
