Two win weight titles at conference tourney
While there will be some who try their luck at state, the middle school wrestling season ended last weekend in Thermopolis for members of the Greybull-Riverside wrestling team.
Thirteen of its grapplers competed, and of those 13, five placed with all the breakthroughs coming in the girls and B divisions. None of G-R’s five A division wrestlers (Marshall Brown, Kenneth McClure, Riley Wiggins, Tell Edeler and Levi Cochrane) placed.
Emma Williams and Jaxon Womack were the team’s only individual champions, with Williams taking the top spot in the 138-pound girls division and Womack reigning in the 120-pound B division. Newcomers to the sport, they were successful, Coach Mark Sanford said, because “they came in, were coachable, listened, did what we asked of them, never stopped battling and kept improving.”
G-R’s other placers included Maythe Garay, second in 110-pound girls division; Denton Nyberg, fourth in 126-pound B division, and Eric VanHuele, third in the 132-pound B division.
While there were individual successes, it wasn’t a great performance by the team, according to Sanford.
“We practiced (last week) like we wanted to be done before Thanksgiving,” he said. “Granted, we ran into some good competition, especially now that the conference includes those other teams, Riverton and Lander. So it’s a really tough tournament. Kids are honed up and ready to go.
“I knew it would be tough for us, but we just didn’t come out and wrestle like we needed to.”
Sanford said he’ll be taking five wrestlers to a state middle school tournament this weekend in Green River. They include Marshall Brown, Noah Blakley, Levi Cochrane, Riley Wiggins and Maythe Garay.
