Veteran Tribute Friday night at Riverside football game
The Riverside football game Friday night is dedicated to veterans and their families. The game starts at 6 p.m. but the tribute will start at 5:50 p.m. Boy Scout Troop #312 will present the colors prior to the pledge and national anthem. The anthem will be sung by Riverside Middle/High School Choir. Veterans will be asked to stand to be recognized by military branch.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 29 table will have poppies and green light bulbs. Green lights are part of the Operation Green Light, the campaign that raises awareness of the challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life. The campaign encourages people to show support for veterans by turning a light green, such as a porch light, to signal that veterans are valued members of the community. The campaign also advocates for legislation to help veterans access resources and transition to civilian life. The Basin Area Chamber and Valley Hardware sponsored the green lights.
Donations will be taken for the poppies, bulbs and/or as tributes to veterans. Money collected will be applied to Christmas boxes for military personnel with local ties serving overseas. Family members of those personnel are asked to provide name and address to the auxiliary. The American Legion Post 29 will sell tickets that evening for a drawing of a Henry Golden Boy lever-action rifle. Marine Corps Recruiter Staff Sergeant Michael McKeon will do the coin toss prior to the start of the Riverside-Midwest game.
The public is asked to wear red, white and blue.
