What do Republicans have in mind next?
Dear Editor:
We have all heard on the ruling from Alabama with IVF. I was recently asked how this can be. I know what they were trying to say. How could we go from abortions to IVF and I’m afraid I didn’t answer well. I think this ruling is horrible. Oh, I know you think they fixed it, but they did not.
All the bill did was protect medical staff and facilities; it did nothing to answer the question of, is this a child? Now remember, many of these fertilized eggs are destroyed due to genetic problems. Some have been donated to couples and to surrogates for couples. Florida was about to release a bill like Alabama, but the backlash made them pause along with 10 other states. The Senate recently tried to enshrine protections for IVF, but was shot down by a woman Republican senator. Can’t have an old white man say anything, although Sen. Tommy Tuberville needs to try and get informed what IVF is. His only answer was, need to have more kids. Another man running for office said he supports it because they breed good families; glad to know that we are good breeders.
The speaker of the house, when asked if he supports IVF, said it was a new technology — only been around since the ‘70s, not very encouraging. Think we are safe here. Sorry to disappoint, bills like Alabama are already in the works.
Here’s something to chew on ladies and the men who know we are competent to make our own decisions: Texas, Louisiana, and Missouri are going after IUDs and the morning-after pill. I think the most distressing is how the majority of the country does not want these laws.
I feel confident now in my answer. It is choice. It is choice of when to have a baby. It should not be a choice if you are in a crisis mood and cannot get treatment. It should be your choice to have IVF if needed and not have some politician telling you to have more kids without understanding what couples go through.
Remember Octo mom, that was IVF and it’s what some politicians want to do to women. Just plant them all in and sees what grows, never mind the health of the woman. I will continue to say this was never about abortions. It has always been about control. Birth control is next.
I was astonished to hear from, I believe, a North Caroline candidate say he wants to go back to when women couldn’t vote. Quiet part out loud? I keep reminding Republicans that this is freedom issue. Remember, the Republicans took away a constitutional right that women had for 50 years and created this mess, and they seem surprised that women are angry.
It makes you wonder what they have in mind next. The State of the Union raised concerns. Why did the Republicans not stand up and clap to support IVF and Social Security. Makes you wonder.
Respectfully,
Lynn Meier
