Winters takes top spot in Cody

With the Middle School competing in Thermopolis and the High School competing in Cody, Burlington’s cross-country team was split but found success in both places.

In a competition with 7 other bigger schools, Burlington’s middle school took the top team spot over Lander by 2 points and Powell by 18 points. “They continue to see success this year,” said coach Ryan Olsen. “Being led by Davin Buck and Bret Winters. Davin continues to impress me this year. He works so hard in practice. It’s not very often that you see a kid smile when you mention a hill workout, but Davin will bring a positive attitude to any workout. Warren Eardley has been the top sixth grade runner in almost every meet this year. We’ve loved having Warren on our team this year. It was great to see him crack the top ten in a race this year, after so many 11th place finishes. Vanessa Winters and Phoebe Knapp also had good performances on a course with a lot of hills.”

The High School competed at the much-loved Foxes and Hounds meet in Cody which starts in reverse order by times, giving runners a chance to chase down the competition. “Kellen Winters started at the back of the pack, seeing some runners get almost a three-minute head start. Kellen passed every runner in front of him and ended up winning the race. It was good for Kellen to get the chance to chase down runners, which he hasn’t had to do much this year. Jaxon Buck also had a nice race, getting closer to running his goal of a sub-20-minute time. I think he’ll get that in Powell this week.”

Burlington will compete in Powell on Friday with Middle School races starting at noon, JV races starting at 1:00 p.m. and Varsity boys at 2:00 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to a great day in Powell this week. The kids always like this course, and it’s perfect for spectators. The weather should cooperate too. This is the point of the season where we should start seeing some personal best times for everybody. We’ve worked through a few nagging injuries and we’re hopefully at peak form for these next couple of weeks. These are great kids and they should be excited to see the results of a lot of hard work this season,” said Olson.
