Worland duo birdies second playoff hole to win Security Invite golf title

Thirty-six holes weren’t enough to decide the gross winner at the biggest tournament of the summer at Midway Golf Course.

Jeff Vail’s birdie of the short par-3 second hole helped him and his teammate, Chris Bundren, outlast the Powell duo of West Hernandez and Ryan Tobin in Sunday’s final round of the Security State Bank Invitational.

The two teams finished four shots clear of their closest pursuers, each finishing with two-round scores of 131. The stalemate continued through the first playoff hole before Vail provided the decider on the second. Vail and Bundren are both from Worland.

Third place in the gross went to Bryan and Bolen Barthelmess (66-69=135), followed in fourth by Austin Frazier and Derik Henderson (73-73=146) and in fifth by Charlie Cooley and Dick Fisher (73-74=147).

Midway-based teams fared better in the net division, where handicaps gets subtracted from gross scores.

Ray Frazier and Carl Olson took first, firing a blistering 59 Sunday after shooting 68 on the opening day. Their finishing score of 127 was five clear of Mike Larchick and Michael Larchick (72-60=132) and seven better than Michael McColloch and Gaven McColloch (72-62=134).

Thomas Scott and Clark Jeffs (66-69=135) finished fourth in the net, followed in fifth by Clint Hoflund and Leo Hoflund (70-66=136).

Twenty-five teams competed in the tournament, which will celebrate its 50th year in 2026.
